The emergence of an ecosystem: 12 startups turning Greece into a startup hub

The emergence of an ecosystem: 12 startups turning Greece into a startup hub

Athens-hero-crop

Having spent time in the tech hubs of New York, San Francisco, and Tel Aviv, Greece was not on the top of my of tech hub bucket list. That said, when I decided to visit Greece  earlier this month, I discovered a burgeoning tech scene in a country famous for its culture and cuisine.

It’s been easy to overlook Greece’s tech scene since the country’s recent economic woes eclipsed most of the other news. The debt crisis sent most businesses reeling, and, despite declared over in 2015, its negative effects still linger today. The rest of Europe still keeps a close eye on the government’s management of the economy and unemployment still is at 23.6 percent in Q4 of 2016.

But despite this grim outlook, I was pleasantly greeted by an energetic tech scene composed of ventures that aim to bring some luster back into Greek entrepreneurship. Greece has at least a couple of major tech success stories that they can be proud of.

Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis appointed WBAF Commissioner for Greece

Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis appointed WBAF Commissioner for Greece

Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, Vice Principal of the International Faculty, CITY College and Chairman of SEERC, was appointed as WBAF Commissioner for Greece

During the World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF) 2017 that  took place 13-14 February in Istanbul, Turkey, Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, co-founder of HeBAN, was appointed as WBAF Commissioner for Greece.

The WBAF honors individuals who have evidently showed their commitment to furthering early-stage investment markets by offering to key individuals the role of WBAF Commissioner.

Becoming a WBAF Commissioner includes embracing certain duties that are designed to serve WBAF members and the global community. Combining regular contributions from many self-motivated WBAF Commissioners around the world means that all forum members benefit from shared knowledge, better networking and increased exposure.

The World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF) 2017 brought key players of all markets together to discuss the benefits and challenges for the angel investment community in achieving successful growth for their businesses. More than 90% of the early-stage investments in Europe come from angel investor capital.

Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis will discuss about “The Science of Success: The Altuntas Start-up Compass Theory” in WBAF 2017

Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis will discuss about “The Science of Success: The Altuntas Start-up Compass Theory” in WBAF 2017

Building on the success of the first World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF) in 2016, this year’s forum, with the theme of ‘Partnering with Corporate Ventures from Start-up to Scale-up to Exit’, will focus on how corporate businesses can foster open innovation and deliver more business value through partnerships with angel investors, start-ups, and SMEs.

In Fireside Chat 2 Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis, co-Founder of HeBAN and Chairman of South-East European Research Center (SEERC), will discuss about “The Science of Success: The Altuntas Start-up Compass Theory”. Many universities have developed their business programme curriculum and the teaching of entrepreneurship methodology to align with the Startup Compass Theory, which proposes nine steps an entrepreneur has to consider: from wannapreneurship to innovation, on to entrepreneurship and marketing and sales, and then to branding to institutionalisation and franchising, finally progressing to leadership and angel investment. While the inclusion of this approach in educational programmes and workshops attests to its success, it has only recently been evaluated and scientifically validated. In this fireside chat, Prof. Panayiotis Ketikidis will present findings about the applicability of the Startup Compass Theory.
